Published 10 Jul 2013

Employers will breathe a sigh of relief as the bill failed to pass on its first reading.

Employment Relations (Statutory Minimum Redundancy Entitlements) Amendment Bill.  This bill under the name of Labour List Member Sue Moroney would have required an employer in the case of a redundancy to:

(a) provide notice of dismissal of no less than 4 weeks; and

(b) pay compensation for redundancy of 4 weeks' remuneration for the first full year of the employee’s continuous employment with the employer; and

(c) pay further compensation for redundancy of 2 weeks’ remuneration for each subsequent full or partial year of the employee’s continuous employment with the employer, up to a maximum entitlement of 26 weeks’ remuneration.

A similar bill was defeated in May 2010
